classrooms, cavities, curriculum and contracts

this past weekend my parents came down to visit... therefore, i enlisted their help to get my classroom going. i knew it was going to be a lot of work; so what better way to spend a weekend of their vacation than scrubbing shelves, sweeping floors and hanging posters!?! my wonderful  mother inlaw also came along for the ride. i don't quite think she knew what she was getting into. she was the one who had to stand on the counters and dust and scrub the book shelves. ick! we got there around 10 on saturday morning and by 12:30 we had the majority of it all done. after we went and ate, we went back and finished what we could. i ran out of paper for my bulletin boards so we are going to austin this saturday and i'll get the rest of what i need. it's really looking good. i went up and worked for another two hours yesterday and i will go back for a while again next week. i'm so excited :)

My wonderful hubby took me to Office Depot yesterday and I got a new chair. I know this sound trivial, but I was so excited because the chair that was left in my room was disgusting! I got a lot of other goodies too... isn't it amazing how excited a teacher can get over new school supplies?.... wow.

Now, on to cavities....
Yesterday Casey and I went to the dentist. I hadn't been since January 2008. I know this b/c I watched Obama's inauguration while they inspected my teeth. And Casey, well, he hadn't been in at least a decade or so. Anyway... we had made a bet prior to the visit that he would have more cavities than me. Well, guess what!?!? Mr. I-rarely-brush-and-never-floss didn't have ANY cavities. And here I am, the one who brushes three times a day and flosses everyday, with a cavity! I have to go back to get that taken care of next week... grr.

About curriculum.... I am freaking out about what I am going to teach my lovely 7th graders come August 23rd. I mean, I have the TEKS (standard set by Texas about the content), but I have no idea where to even begin with them! Oh my. I better get busy on my days off and get planning! Otherwise, my hormonal kiddos will be doing a lot of "projects".

I have tried 3 times to go and sign my contract and still haven't done so. I had a friend tell me that was the crucial part of this whole ordeal. However, I feel that being the ONLY 7th grade Science teacher and Yoakum being such a small school district, nothing should happen between now and the time I get to sign....which has now been moved to July 7th. Whew. I'll just be glad to get that VERY minute detail out of the way.

Hope everyone has a great fourth! Hopefully we won't wash away with hurricane Alex headed toward the Texas coast!!!

  1. Sorry about the cavities. I've never had one, but Jordan had 2 root canals last year...so he makes up for me! lol!

  2. Congrats on getting your room set up!! Looks great!! I really need to get into mine, being 9 months pregnant is not going to be fun when setting up my new room. I'm sure I will enlist a ton of help.

I hear ya on the curriculum. I'm a tad worried about going from high school to middle school. It also doesn't help that I won't start the year. I kind of flew by the seat of my pants last year but I really have to be organized for the sub.
